FTP Frequently Asked Questions
What is FTP?
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, which is basically a way of transferring files from
your computer to another computer using an FTP client (your on your side) and an FTP server (the other
side). A protocol is simply a set of rules or the "language" used to communicate between
the two computers.
What do I need to upload using FTP?
You need a software program known as an FTP client. There are many freely available FTP clients
on the Internet. We have a list of some on our FTP Software page.
How much do FTP clients cost?
There are several FTP clients available for free. In addition, so commercial FTP programs
give discounts to non-profit or non-commercial groups. Of course, if you want an advanced
set of features or need support, commercial FTP software is a good buy. Price range is $20 to $80
depending on features, support, and company offering the software. Even so, most of these
companies offer free trails so you can try before you buy.
Do free websites come with FTP access?
Yes. Currently, this is the only method available for uploading to a free website account. Additional
methods are in development. See our FTP for Free Websites page for more details.
Should I use FTP on a FrontPage website?
It depends, but generally no. If the site has FrontPage extensions, then it is advisable to not use
FTP to upload files unless you are uploading large multimedia (audio, video, etc.) files. FrontPage
and FTP don't usually like each other and there are many "known issues" when using
FTP and FrontPage together. We recommend you either use FrontPage to manage everything
(including uploading) OR you use FTP.
